HISTORY AND AIMS OF JOHAN CENTRE

Since 1998 Johan, cultural and social projects Plzeň has been developing its activities along three main lines: artistic projects (festivals, theatre and paratheatre projects, production, consulting), social work (streetwork, contact and information center for problematic youth, primary prevention of pathological phenomenons, resocialization projects and work with voluntreers) and educational projects (concerned with methods based on educating by art, esthetic education, drama education and personal and social developement). The work of the center is based on the idea of an open space for dealing with all kinds of physical, psychical and social handicaps. Present at its birth were teachers, students and artists mainly from the area of theatre. The center gradually became an important and respected partner of many Czech (national center for non-professional artistic activities ARTAMA, association New Network, Society for countryside renewal etc.) and interantional activities (Youth for Europe).

After gradually gaining experience, the center Johan started supporting new origianal projects in the field of esthetic education and art, but also in the field of social work. At present, the main space is directed towards supporting and inspiring independent theatre projects (theatre studio, independent theatre companies) paratheatrical projects (activities in the streets, happenings). Annex to this is the systematic work in organizing artistic courses and documenting original artistic projects. To those who are interested Johan offers the possibility to encounter current artistic trends within performing arts through a series of open creative workshops. The results of our work guided by interesting and inspiring artists and creators from the Czech republic and abroad are presented to public. Moreover the center is trying to create a space and conditions for other original and independent works. JOHAN is currantly building studios for rehearsing and technical equipment and it offers help to beginning artists with guiding projects, financing and other specific problems.

Projects directed towards presentation of new works of art have also become important: shows and festivals. Authorised by the Ministery of Culture of the Czech Republic the center organizes regional festivals in three fields: children’s drama activities (Children’s Scene), puppet theatre (Puppet Theatre Chrudim), poetry performance and theatre of poetry (Wolker‘s Prostějov) and moreover we participated in festivals of young and untraditional theatre (festival in Plasy with selection for Šrámek‘s Písek) and last year also Kašpar‘s Kolín (dance theatre).

In order to achieve its goals the activities of Johan are mainly concentrated on creating a space for cultural-social contacts Open Space for Communication Moving Station in the empty building of the railway station Plzen –South. The building of the railway station became the site of the first site specific projects but also a laboratory and a methodical base. Gradually, we opened possibilities for creative workshops with lecturers that use different kinds of site specific methods in their work as well as for interesting productions (project Alternative on the rails, festival Big Stocktaking). Some activities were also conducted in other unique buildings (baroque monastery in Chotěšov, Art Nouveau slaughterhouse in Aš, monument for the victims in Buchenwald).

International context has been an important feature of our work since the beginning. Johan has as a partner taken part in many international project (PLEASE TAKE ME AS A DREAM / BITTE BETRACHTEN SIE MICH ALS EINEN TRAUM - Plzeň , Hannover and Graz; HIN UND UND ZURUCK / There and back again Plzeň, Cham, München; FAM.FATALE – Plzeň, Graz, Linz, Maribor, Kobenhagen).

The work of the center would be impossible without the involvement of many volunteers, but also the subsidies from the city of Plzen, the Region of Plzen, Ministery of Culture of the Czech Republic, The National Cultural Fund, the foundation Open society fund, the Czech and German Future Fund and many others.
