MOVING STATION / Hemžící se zastávka

Moving Station is an independent space for alternative culture in the city of Plzen. The space where this experiment is being carried out is the building of the former railway station Plzen – South. The building dating back from 1904 is in itself a rare monument and it has become a place where, following several site specific projects, an inspirative space for innovative creativity of mainly young artist from Plzen and the west Bohemian region was born.

The space of the former railway station (Moving Station) has since its opening served as a studio for theatre makers (workshops, rehearsals and original projects), artists (exhibitions and workshop space) and musicians (recording and concerts). The building has become a birthplace of many original and successfull projects that represent the independent culture of Plzen, in some cases also abroad.

The meeting between different art forms (theatre, performance, visual art, music, video art, literature) and artists from different countries using diverse creative methods and their blending has become an important feature in the life of the Moving Station. The old railway station building has become a meeting place for leading artists and those who are still seeking a way of  self-realization in art.

The theater companies that have presented their work in the building of the railway station include for example Teatr Osmego Dnie (Poland), Teatr Novogo Fronta (CZ – Russia), Bílé divadlo, Divadlo Sedm a půl, Independant theatre TYAN, Ryuzo Fukuhara, Ken Mai (Japan), Stage Code (Switzerland – CZ), Nanohách and others.

Despite the limited acoustic and technical possibilities of the building, several remarkable concerts have been organized successfully. Especially musicians from the alternative circles have presented their art here: Agnes Kutas (Hungary), Michael Delia (USA, 2001), Pavel Fajt a Stepanida Borisova (2002), V.R.M. (2002), American Sabot (2003), Doubravánek (2004), Ridina Ahmed (2004). Interesting dance performances where offered by e.g. DJ´s Liquid A, Yukimura, One Dread and others.
The raw space of the railway station creates a unique atmosphere for exhibitions. The exhibitions of young artists have become a tradition (exhibitions of the students of the art department of the West Bohemian University Versus1 a Versus2, workshops Meeting Point and also exhibitions of photographic collections Lost Neighbours– Radovan Kodera, Roma in the Czech Republic – photographers connected with the foundation Man in Need, with a strong cultural-social emphasis, international workshop Root Room guided by John Walbank from Great Britain.). At present a promissing cooperation is developing with the Art and Design Departement of the university.

The main tradition that is being developed in the railway station by the cultural-social center Johan are the creative worshops of site-specific and alternative theatre. The results of all the workshops have been presented to the public, either as a part of the „off-off“ program of the international festival Theatre or as a contribution to the cultural life during summer.  The workshops have been guided by well known theatre artists and perfomers from abroad: Stefanía Thors (Iceland), Sachio Takahashi,  Ryuzo Fukuhara (Japan),  Philipe Schenker (Switzerland), Dominik Houdard (France), with Junge Leute Theater Bayern (Germany), Ewa Woiciak and Tadeusz Januszewski (Poland). Some of the workshops where also lead by interesting personalities of the contemporary Czech independent theatre Roman Černík (ZČU Plzeň), Tomáš Žižka (DAMU Praha), Daniela Voráčková (Stage Code).

The goals of the program of the center are – developement of mutual social communication in the three key areas: artistic communication (mutual inspiration between different artforms), interdisciplinary communication (between art, education and social work), social communication (between generations and different social groups).

The main means of the centre’s activities are the planned own artistic activities with a significant social and community emphasis (cooperation with local people, communicating local problems, space and  professional guidance of local culture and social activities).  Our goal is to create a functional center opened daily. This center will offer a spectrum of mutually connected activities in order to initiate interesting projects that would enrich the city’s cultural life and that of the city quarter.

The work of Moving Station so far is directed towards the activities mentioned above, individual steps are being tested under the current, if improvised, conditions. The thanks for the opportunity to realize the whole project belong to the association JOHAN and the Czech railway company České dráhy a. s.
