SEPARATION

How many accidents, how many misfortunes worked here for her during those four years in the air, at sea, in the mines and on the roads, how many floods and earthquakes, but I am not ashamed of and nor do I apologise for the fact that of all those deaths, I am most moved by the death of these two.” Jan Zahradníček, Čtyři léta.

An intimate testament in dance to the loss of children. The production arose with the aim of supporting bereaved parents on their long journey, and from the author’s need to talk about a taboo subject.

Markéta Vacovská
Czech dancer and choreographer.

She studied Non-Verbal Theatre at HAMU in Prague, and since 2009 has been a member of the Spitfire Company, with which she has created more than ten productions as either a performer or choreographer. For One Step Before the Fall, a Spitfire Company production that she choreographed, working with Petr Boháč (direction), Lenka Dusilová (music) and Martin Špetlík (light design), she won the Dancer of the Year award at the Czech Dance Platform festival, a Herald Angel award at the Edinburgh Fringe, a Divadelní noviny award for choreography, a New Network award and also a broader nomination for a Thálie award. She has experience of working with other companies and theatres both as an author and dancer, for example Studio Hrdinů, Divadlo Kolonie, Cirkus Mlejn and the Žongléros ensemble. In August 2019 she was the only Czech woman to be selected for a fourteen-day improvisation workshop, Yes to the Wind, with choreographer Meg Stuart, who is her great role model. Her most recent auteur production, Separation (06/2020) was created in cooperation with the musician Sára Vondrášková and with the enthusiastic support of the theatre Venuše ve Švehlovce.
